Minnesota Counseling for Work Stress

Your career should enhance your life, not detract from it.

“I don’t have enough time for a social life.”
“I’m not sure if this is what I should be doing.”
“I feel stuck here.”

You hear the ping of yet another email…and no matter the day, time, or circumstance, you can’t help but read it. Your productive, efficient nature feels like it’s starting to backfire: you feel taken advantage of, overworked, and unable to say “no.”

This isn’t the career you imagined for yourself. It’s not necessarily that you aren’t performing well, it’s just that you don’t feel truly confident or fulfilled. You may feel isolated and disconnected in today’s work-from-home culture or disappointed that you spent years getting a degree in this field but not enjoying it like you expected to.

You can’t help but notice how these challenges at work are starting to spill over into the other areas of your life, too. You don’t have time at night to get together with friends or go on a date. How does everyone else seem to juggle this so well?

A fulfilling career doesn’t start with your job description. It starts with getting back in touch with what’s important to you.

Counseling work for stress isn’t just about finding ways to manage all of your responsibilities or making decisions about what to do next in your career (although we’ll definitely work on those things!). It’s also about supporting you in defining your values—those deeply held goals and beliefs inside of you—and empowering you to use those as a guide for your path forward.

Things we can work on together:

  • Weighing the costs and benefits of overextending yourself

  • Improving assertiveness and boundary setting around your time & energy

  • Understanding the societal systems that may be trying to hold you back

  • Setting long-term goals in alignment with your values

  • Increasing confidence in your decision-making and skillset

  • Improving work-life balance

 How It Works

Each of us has principles or standards that help us decide what’s important in life.

When we don’t take the time to actually explore those values, we can end up in circumstances that don’t feel “right,” but have a hard time identifying why.

That’s why therapy with me always begins by putting words to what matters most to you—not only in your career, but in your life as a whole. Once we know this, we can start looking at the areas of your job that may be out of sync with that inner compass.

What would you do if you felt more confident? More sure of yourself? More in tune with your purpose? I want to help you answer that question, and then make a plan to actually accomplish it. I’ll challenge you to examine the beliefs, systems, or fears that are under the surface and address them in a way that leaves you feeling more fulfilled and purposeful in your 9-5 and beyond.

FAQS

  • No. The term “career counseling” refers to a specific type of therapy designed to help clients find the right professional path for them, often using tools like personality & skills evaluations, job search resources, and more.

In counseling for work stress, we’ll look at your experience in the workplace more broadly, considering not only what steps you need to take in your career, but also how to improve self-confidence, cultivate healthier relationships, and address underlying causes of stress such as anxiety or depression.

In the event we determine that formal career counseling would be useful for you, I’ll provide referrals for some great clinicians to connect with.

  • It’s normal to feel stressed at work sometimes; every role has its fair share at one point or another. But when that stress starts to affect other areas of your life, such as your sleep, relationships, health, or overall life satisfaction, it’s worth taking a look at. My clients often come to me because the stress they’re experiencing is no longer contained to just the workday, and they want help not only with managing it, but getting to the root cause behind it (so they can change it for good).
