Individual Therapy for Relationships in MN & WI

MN Relationship Counseling

Takeaway: You deserve relationships where you can show up as your true self. Working one-on-one with a relationship therapist can help you do just that. Together, we’ll uncover the patterns that keep you stuck and reconnect with your core values to help you find relationships you feel good about. Start the process today.

Disconnected.
Frustrated.
Resentful.

When you think of your current relationships—the ones with your friends, your partner, your family—do words like this come to mind?

Your friends seem to have it “all together,” and you can’t help but feel disappointed when you see Instagram stories where they’ve gotten together and haven’t invited you. You’re quick to say “yes” if it means people won’t be upset with you (even when you’d really like to say “no”).

Maybe you’re single and dating but can’t seem to find the kind of long-lasting relationship you really want, or perhaps you’ve been in a relationship for years and aren’t sure if it’s still where you want to be. You don’t feel connected to or understood by your partner, and you’re left doing all of the emotional heavy lifting just to keep things afloat.

Your relationships should be a place where you feel safe, seen, & fulfilled.

If they don’t feel that way right now, that’s okay. It’s possible. In individual therapy for relationships, we’ll work on better understanding the disconnection you’re feeling, examining your thoughts and beliefs about yourself and how you show up, and tangible skills & strategies that you can put into practice.

I’m here to support you with all of your relationships, including the most important one of all: the one you have with yourself.

Meet Beth Klein, MS, LMFT | Relationship therapist in Minnesota

Hi, I'm Beth. I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist serving people throughout the state of Minnesota. I provide individual therapy services to help women deepen their understanding of their needs, values, and patterns for the purpose of building genuine, fulfilling relationships.

The women I work with are successful, career-driven women who long for deeper connections with people but aren't sure how to get there. They want friendships, romantic relationships, connections with coworkers, and relationships with family members that feel authentic and aren't just based on convenience or surface-level interaction.

To find true intimacy, the work begins with building a healthy relationship with yourself. It can feel daunting to explore your innermost thoughts, feelings, and desires, but it's necessary to lay the foundation for stronger relationships with others. Thankfully, you don't have to do it alone—I'll be your advocate, confidant, and supporter through it all.

My approach to relationship counseling in MN

When you're struggling internally, it's difficult to show up as your most genuine self with others. I recognize the vulnerability it takes to start this process, which is why I'm committed to making my relationship counseling room a safe, supportive environment. I believe that the most effective therapy is based on a solid connection between therapist and client, so I prioritize trust and respect in our working relationship.

My approach to relationship therapy is highly interactive and engaging. Unlike some other marriage and family therapists, I don't act as a blank slate during this process. Rather, I offer my honest feedback and support you in digging deep, even if it involves facing hard truths and uncomfortable emotions.

I use a variety of treatment methods to help you reflect on the underlying issues that contribute to your relationship issues. We'll collaborate to find the ones that work best for you, but here's an idea of the therapeutic modalities that inform my approach.

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

  • Exposure and response prevention therapy (ERP)

  • Narrative therapy

  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

  • Solution-focused therapy (SFT)

Beyond these specific techniques, I also take a feminist, social-justice-informed approach to relationship therapy. Women experience a number of unique stressors and social conditioning that can contribute to relationship problems. Other forces, like racism or homophobia, can also play a significant role. Together, we'll explore how you can live a life in accordance with your values in the face of these harmful dynamics.

Things we can work on together:

Friends

  • Stop the cycle of comparison

  • Communicate what you need

  • Manage disappointment or resentment

  • Cultivate healthy, mutually beneficial friendships

Romantic

  • Navigate the dating scene and its challenges

  • Make decisions about the future of your relationships

  • Improve communication

  • Ask for what you want and need

Self

  • Identify what matters most to you

  • Address anxiety or fear that’s holding you back

  • Increase self-confidence

  • Improve assertiveness and boundary setting

 How It Works

Individual therapy for relationships is all about first helping you better understand yourself: your values, your emotions, and the common themes that often arise in your relationships with others.

Why do you feel resentful? What is behind that fear of speaking up for yourself? Why doesn’t this relationship feel right? I’m here to help you discover the answers to questions like these and the underlying stories, beliefs, or systems that have led to them. Often, this insight is incredibly empowering as you start to create a picture of what’s holding you back from the kinds of relationships you truly want.

From there, we’ll work on ways to assert yourself, set boundaries that honor your true self, improve communication, and more. You’ll leave therapy not only with greater insight, but with a toolbox of skills that can be put into practice with every relationship in your life.

An investment in

Yourself. Your relationships. Your life.

FAQS about relationship therapy in Minnesota

  • No. This is therapy for individuals who want to work 1:1 with a therapist to improve their relationships. If you are currently in counseling with a couples therapist and want to work individually with a therapist, I would love to work with you.

  • I know how difficult it can be to feel like you’ve done everything to improve your relationship with someone and still not see a change. That’s one of the things we focus on in therapy: recognizing the things you can control and releasing the things you can’t. You’re not responsible for the way other people behave or react, but you can decide what you do, say, and think. I’m here to help you do that.

  • This is a great question—one I get a lot! It’s important to recognize that therapy is not simply you on your own; it’s work that’s done in relationship with someone else: your therapist. I have the training and experience to observe patterns in your relationships, equip you with skills and resources, and guide you into newer, deeper levels of insight into yourself. Each of these things can transform the way you relate to the people in your life.

  • Absolutely! Unlike couples counseling, marriage counseling, premarital counseling, or family therapy, individual relationship therapy empowers you to take your growth and healing into your own hands. While couples therapy can be an effective tool at times, it requires two people who are willing to put in the work.

Plus, individual relationship therapy can help you improve all your relationships, including those with coworkers, family members, and friends—not just a romantic partner. I've seen firsthand how impactful this kind of therapy can be for women, but you don't need to take my word for it alone. Research shows that individual therapy can improve relationship distress.

  • I want you to receive the best possible care, and that starts with working with the right therapist. That’s why I offer a free, confidential consultation to help you decide if I’m a good fit for you and your goals. Click this link to schedule yours.
